**Another example of having the best intentions...I wrote this post on Tuesday!** Whew! Today was a blur! Lots of fun, lots of reminders about behavior choices (we're still figuring out where boundaries are), lots of practicing routines and building stamina, and a good dose of the unexpected as well! We practiced our "Read to Self" skills this morning during our "Panther Prowl" time. Last week, we "read" quietly for over six minutes on one day. Today, our max was two and a half minutes. We were a chatty bunch today, and read to self time? No chatting allowed! Anyway, here are a few pictures I took of the class reading hard!

When I say Saturday, I guess I really mean late-Saturday-night-and-even-maybe-Sunday. My apologies. We had soccer games and pictures all morning, a visiting-from-out-of-town grandma much of the day, and a not very successful trip to do our shopping. The kind of trip where I realize that organizing 23 children who are in my class is much simpler than organizing 3 children who are mine! Enough of that, though. This week, we began our small group learning time with our helpers Mrs. Schall and Miss Martin. We met many letters this week, from F to N! We practiced writing many of them during small group time. We read several new books, featuring our new letters, and our "sight" words, I and am. In math, we worked printing the numerals 1, 2, and 3, and worked on counting to 4 and 5, and building a sense of "how many" those numbers are. The weather proved a bit unpredictable this week, but we were lucky to get out for all of our during the day recesses. Our playground gets very chilly/windy, so jackets/heavy sweatshirts are a great plan, especially for the mornings. Last, but not least...I did not take many photos this week, but I tried to snap a few during recess. I will update with more photos again tomorrow!Mrs. Adkins
Hmmmm...I thought I had posted this Saturday night. My apologies for not double checking! The post was written then, and I could have sworn I hit post! Enjoy, even though it is late appearing to you! Hi, everyone! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend! Ours has been very busy, hence the lateness of this post. This week, we officially began our Language Arts series. We introduced letters A, B, C, D, and E. The students and I worked hard on some beginning of the year testing and assessments (not my favorite way to start the year, but the knowledge gained is valuable, and allows me to better meet the needs of all students). We continue to work on learning the routines of the classroom, and I am LOVING getting to know everyone a little better each day. We also began our math series this week. Please be patient with me as I learn the ins and outs of this program! It is a new program, and we are figuring it all out. Our focus for the first couple weeks of school will be on working with numbers 0-5, and using them for many different skills. One way you can support your child's learning is by having him or her create different groups of items (again, from 1-5 items), and "touch one, count one", to reinforce that concept of "number". Math homework will come home a couple times a week. Please complete it with your child, and return to school the following day. Information about school pictures came home in your child's folder this week. The photo order form will be coming home soon, but note that the date of pictures is October 8. ALL students will have their photo taken (for use in the school yearbook), whether you are planning to order pictures or not. Keep this in mind when dressing your child for school on this date. Finally, here are some photos of our week! Enjoy, and I'll try (but no promises!) to post again before next weekend! I really will be getting some photos and content added today! Tumbling class yesterday and soccer today have consumed more time than expected! I am posting this while running errands with my family. I would do the whole post, but every time I add in more than two photos, the app crashes! Sorry!! Mrs. Adkins
The first week of kindergarten is always an adventure! We have fun, we try new things, and we learn about what it means to be at school with so many other friends. One of the things I really spoke with the students a lot about this week was the importance of being brave. Kindergarten is full of new adventures, and it sometimes seems kind of scary. If we can be brave (or at least pretend to be brave), it is a lot more fun! I know it is still hard, for both kiddos and parents, to say goodbye in the morning, but I promise, if your child is upset when you leave, it does not last for long! This week, we began to put basic classroom routines into place. Next week, we will dive into our academics full-force! We have a new math series this year, which I am figuring out as I go (we got our math supplies less than a week before school started, so please be patient as I learn the ropes!). Our reading series is an old friend, and I am excited to begin with the students. Over the first 4 weeks, we meet each letter of the alphabet. After that, we will take more of a "letter of the week" approach, but still review ALL letters on a regular basis. We will begin learning the 40 sight words for the year next week, and I will send home the WHOLE list next week, so you can see where we are headed. We began learning about our 5 senses this week in science. We will finish learning about our 5 senses next week. The most important thing we did this week was meet all of the other students in our class. They have certainly begun building friendships and relationships. I took a beginning-of-the-year photo of each student in our class this week, and I wanted to share them here. I will not share student names at this time, but if your child's nametag is in the photo, I also have not edited it out. These photos are also going to be part of your child's permanent desk tag, as soon as I finish assembling them in Photoshop! Have your child look through the photos with you, and see how many students he or she can name. We are going to be working hard at building friendships and learning our friends names over the next few weeks! |
